Welcome to the Waka Ama Safety Course.
Having safety knowledge and the right equipment is vital to staying safe out on the water when paddling. Waka Ama NZ and Coastguard present the Waka Ama Safety Course to support and encourage safe practices essential to paddling waka ama.
To achieve this, the emphasis is on enhancing safety specific to paddlers and includes basic skills, safety equipment, the weather, and communications. A waka ama paddler should possess skills to make sound judgements in the maritime environment as well as the technical ability to handle their waka. While this course is designed to support all aspects of safe practice, a waka ama club or commercial waka ama operator or retailer may provide additional advice and support for developing technical skills.
Learning Method
The online course is made up of four sections. Within each online section are written text, photos and videos to enhance your knowledge, followed by a touch-point quiz to prepare you for the final assessment.
Assessment
Once each section of the course is complete, you will be required to complete the online assessment to finish the course.
